alfredo marin, originally from costa rica, is a music/sound artist living and working in new york city. the vocabulary of his work is a synthesis of melodic and harmonic moments, concrete recorded sounds, and abstract electronic sound coupled with the possibilities inherent in the theatrical aspects of sound production (loudspeakers) and performance. alfredo's body of work is quite diverse in terms of style, genre, and aesthetic. some compositions are loud and chaotic, others are soft and subtle, some rely heavily on improvisation and yet others are through-composed. some compositions make use of functional tonality as well as non-tonal systems and yet others explore non-pitch abstract acoustic sound. alfredo’s compositional process is eclectic and mutable. what is most important to him therefore is not to satisfy the expectations of an audience identified with a given context (say a specific genre, style, or aesthetic) but rather to foster, control, and express his own artistic voice. alfredo has earned an mfa from the milton avery graduate school of the arts at bard college and bachelor degrees in music performance and music composition from brooklyn college cuny. alfredo has presented his compositions in various venues and organizations throughout new york city, such as chashama, roulette, pianos, and the stone among others.
