suzanne thorpe is a musician and composer who extends her practice with an ever-evolving set-up of analogue and digital software components. she composes site-specific works that employ psycho-acoustic phenomena, aural harmonics and tuned filtering systems that have been presented at issue project room (nyc), judson church (nyc), diapason (nyc), megapolis festival (baltimore), activating the medium festival (san francisco), slowfloat (the delaware river), la botanica (houston) and exhibited at kleio gallery (nyc), exit art (nyc) and the lightship frying pan. as an improviser, thorpe has performed with chris brown, chris cogburn, annette krebs, maggie nicols, pauline oliveros, gino robair, miya masaoka, fred frith, ulrich krieger, zbigniew karkowski, anti-matter, miguel frasconi, and zeena parkins among others. she has performed at venues such as the stone (nyc), issue project room (nyc), no idea festival (austin, tx), pyramid atlantic center for the arts (silver spring, md), l'envers (montreal, canada), white box (nyc), 1510 (oakland), lmak (nyc), the luggage store (san francisco, ca), greenwich house music school (nyc), roulette (nyc) and more. she is a founding member of critically acclaimed mercury rev, with whom she composed, performed, recorded, produced and toured from 1989 through 1998, earning numerous critical accolades and a gold record for 1998's deserters' songs. she has appeared on over 20 recordings on labels such as sony, v2, beggars banquet, geffen, specific recordings, and tape drift, and can most recently be heard on j mascis' solo record several shades of why. thorpe is one half of the flute and feedback duo thenumber46 with media artist philip white, and one forth of the quartet volume (n) alongside shelley burgon, maria chavez and stephan moore. |
